(AP) Greenpeace staged a protest on Friday at the European Commission headquarters in Brussels to highlight the wildfires burning in the Amazon rainforest.

Activists scaled the building to unfurl a banner reading “Amazon fires, Europe guilty”.

Greenpeace representative Sini Erajaa said the protest was to “remind” European leaders they share responsibility for ongoing wildfires and deforestation in the Amazon.

“We are directly responsible because of our growing consumption of products like meat, dairy, palm oil, timber which are affecting not only the Amazon, but plenty other ecosystems around the world,” she said.

Erajaa said the activists were also there to “remind European leaders that they have the power and the responsibility to act on this”.

“We need new rules and new legislation to make sure that products coming from this kind of destruction are not sold on European markets,” she added.
