U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Tuesday called on the federal government to provide funding for funeral and burial assistance across New York state.

Schumer and Ocasio Cortez. said the use of the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) Disaster Funeral Assistance program would help low-income communities and and communities of color afford to bury loved one’s who have died during the COVID-19 pandemic.

They argued New York, and in particular, Ocasio-Cortez’s district in both Queens and the Bronx, have been the hardest hit by COVID-19.

For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.

President Trump approved a Major Disaster Declaration on March 20th but now FEMA must approve special funeral assistance, which is currently under review.

Schumer and Ocasio-Cortez called for swift approval to help struggling families hit by the pandemic crisis.
