Coronavirus: University Holds Virtual Graduation Ceremony

Date: 2020-05-19 04:48:14

The University of Virginia’s Class of 2020 gathered virtually for a stay-at-home graduation ceremony during the coronavirus pandemic.

Thousands of students gathered in front of their televisions or computer monitors to celebrate the day.

The campus was a ghost town.

President Jim Ryan spoke solo on the lawn.

“If you’re watching this with your family and friends, please take a moment to thank them for their support. No one makes it to graduation alone,” he said.

There were surprise performances by students, rock band Dave Matthews and renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

The university says the event was not intended to replace Final Exercises, which will be held in-person, depending on the Covid-19 pandemic.
