EUROPE CASES STABILIZING
Europe is expected to start stabilizing soon, the World Health Organization said, as Italy saw the slowest rate of new cases in almost two weeks. New York also said new infections are slowing, even as it reported a 26% increase in deaths.
CUOMO BEGS HEALTH WORKERS TO HELP
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo called on healthcare professionals around the U.S. to come to New York to help fight the surge in coronavirus cases. “If you don’t have a healthcare crisis in your community, please come help us in New York now. We need relief,” he said at a press briefing on Monday at the Javits Center in Manhattan, New York.
U.S. NAVY HOSPITAL SHIP DOCKS IN NYC
A Navy hospital ship with 1,000 beds arrived Monday in New York City as officials pressed for more federal help. Mayor Bill de Blasio said President Donald Trump’s suggestion that thousands of medical masks are disappearing from New York City hospitals is “insulting” to front-line medical workers.
NEW VACCINE TRIALS
Johnson & Johnson rose in pre-market trading after saying it had selected a lead Covid-19 vaccine candidate. The company expects to initiate human clinical studies latest by September and anticipates the first batches of a vaccine could be available for emergency use authorization in early 2021.
Abbott Laboratories shares rose 18% in U.S. pre-market trading after the company introduced a coronavirus test that can tell if someone is infected in as little as five minutes, and is so small and portable it can be used in almost any health-care setting.
