Election 2020: Covid-Safe Watch Party Held in Philadelphia

Date: 2020-11-04 07:18:10

Following Covid-19 safety measures, a neighborhood in Philadelphia watched live coverage of the the U.S. presidential election on a screen with a fire pit and drinks.

Bloomberg News is reporting live election results in the presidential race between Republican Donald Trump and his Democratic challenger, former Vice President Joe Biden. It’s possible that neither candidate reaches the 270 electoral votes needed to win by the end of election night. Record numbers of voters cast ballots early, in person or by mail, due to the coronavirus pandemic. States may be slow in counting and reporting those votes.

Bloomberg News is estimating the percentage of total votes that have been counted using our own turnout model. This number is more difficult to calculate than in past years because of how many people chose to vote absentee or by mail instead of at their precinct on Election Day.

Even when the vote totals reach 100%, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the count is final. Values can exceed 100% when turnout is higher than the model estimated. Right now, total vote estimates assume high voter turnout, but this assumption may change throughout the night in response to early turnout reports.
