North Korean leader Kim Jong Un waves to crowds as they commemorate the 8th Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea in Pyongyang. North Korea held a big military parade in the capital Pyongyang late Thursday to celebrate the major conference of the ruling party.
The parade featured developmental ballistic missiles designed to be launched from submarines and other military hardware. Kim vowed maximum efforts to bolster his nuclear and missile program.
The Korean Central News Agency on Friday released photos of Kim wearing a black fur hat and leather trench coat, smiling widely as thousands of troops and civilian spectators filled Kim Il Sung Square, named after his grandfather and North Korea’s founder.
The agency said spectators roared as troops rolled out the country’s most advanced strategic weapons, including submarine-launched ballistic missiles it described as the “world’s mightiest.”
Kim Jong Un will put North Korea on a path to develop more advanced nuclear technologies and missiles, sending a chilling warning to President-elect Joe Biden that the Asian leader is ready to ratchet up security tensions.
Kim called the U.S. a “war monster” and his “biggest main enemy,” at the first Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea in five years, according to the state’s Korean Central News Agency. He said he would focus on “subduing” the U.S. and continue to enhance nuclear capability to ensure North Korea’s “autonomic development.”
