Protesters Clash With Police as Anger and Despair Mount in Lebanon

Date: 2020-08-07 10:58:09

Lebanese protesters clashed with police late Thursday as they tried to approach government buildings in central Beirut.

Police responded with tear gas and dispersed the crowd.

Tensions are high following Tuesday’s devastating explosion in Beirut that killed at least 130 people.

Earlier on Thursday, Beirut residents showed their anger against the government during a visit by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Many Lebanese blame the disaster on the country’s political elites, accusing them of corruption and mismanagement.

For months the country has been on the brink of economic collapse, and the explosion has made ordinary life untenable for many people.
