World Health Organisation (WHO) scientists focusing on the coronavirus response say there has been no transmission or clusters at the agency’s Geneva headquarters.

“We have had a number of cases through that time. Most cases have been acquired at community level, very few within within the building here but we’ve been very vigilant,” Mike Ryan, WHO’s emergencies chief, told reporters on Monday.

He warned however that “no environment right now in the world is without risk.”

Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s technical lead on the COVID-19 pandemic, said the agency was tracking all cases among staff and carrying out contact tracing to ensure that transmission wasn’t taking place at its Geneva headquarters.

“But it is something we’re monitoring every day,” she said.

WHO officials made the comments to reporters after the UN agency’s chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, announced that he was starting a self-quarantine after coming into contact with a person who tested positive for the virus.

“I am well and without symptoms, but will self quarantine in the coming days in line with WHO protocols,” Tedros said via video conference from his home during a regular WHO news conference.

The WHO director-general has been at the forefront of the global response to the coronavirus pandemic, which has infected at least 46.5 million people and led to more than 1.2 million deaths, according to a count of confirmed cases by Johns Hopkins University.

Tedros’ tweet came the same day as authorities in Geneva, where the UN health agency is based, announced a tightening of restrictions aimed to curb the spread of the virus.

A recent spike has more than 1,000 new cases recorded each day recently in an area of about 500,000 people.
